David Kincaid, a Civil War re-enactor and a fine singer, has pulled together 12 songs
written about and popular among the 160,000 Irish-born soldiers who fought to
preserve the Union. These songs are good, rousing martial songs, accompanied by
Liz Knowles, Jerry O'Sullivan, and John Whelan. Kincaid himself sings a little like Ron
Kavana. The songs shed light on the ethnic pride the Irish felt as they fought against
the South. The only familiar song on here is "Paddy's Lamentation," which gets great
treatment. Add to this liner notes that contain complete lyrics and are themselves
hefty enough to be used in hand-to-hand combat, and the result is a fine piece of
work.
